Description: Study of modern and contemporary literary portrayals of illness (and medical practitioners) and various representations of illness as well as individual artists' significant insight into the modern psyche by way of illness, some works suggesting that illness is a metaphor for modern man's loss of hope, purpose, direction and sympathy. Some works may romanticize illness, suggesting that through illness people often allegedly experience or gain a deeper humanity.
